Biei 

Located in the center of Hokkaido, Biei is a charming rural town known for its rolling hills, colorful flower fields, and tranquil atmosphere. You should visit Biei if you want a relaxing time, surrounded by beautiful nature. 

Biei is easily accessible from popular cities like Sapporo and Asahikawa, a train or bus ride will bring you into its enchanting countryside. 

The ‘Patchwork Road’, a popular spot in Biei, derives its name from the mesmerizing view of its fields from above, as the farmland looks somewhat like a patchwork quilt. 

This picturesque area is situated northwest of Biei’s town center and encompasses a collection of scenic roads rather than a single one. Throughout the year, visitors are treated to breathtaking rural landscapes, with the summer and autumn months displaying vibrant shades of green and various colors, while winter blankets the region in a serene layer of snow.

No roads lead further than about three fourths up the peninsula, and the northern tip can only be viewed from boats or be reached on multi-day trekking tours. 

A boat tour around the Shiretoko Peninsula is an absolute must, where you can witness the breathtaking sight of drifting ice floes during summer. The peninsula’s pristine waters are home to various marine life, including seals and dolphins. 

Kushiro Marshland 

For a unique nature experience, head to Kushiro Marshland. It was designated as a national park in 1987 in order to preserve the country’s largest wetland and marsh habitat which supports the only known population of endangered Japanese Cranes. 

Once believed to be extinct in Japan as a result of overhunting and habitat destruction, the Japanese Cranes, also known as “Tancho” (which translates to “red head” in Japanese), experienced a remarkable rediscovery in 1926.  

Around Kushiro’s marshlands, a group of approximately 20 of these majestic birds was found. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, their population has undergone a dramatic resurgence, thriving to over 1000 birds today. 

Kushiro Marshland is a paradise for bird watchers, as it hosts a diverse range of avian species, including the elegant Japanese cranes. There are observatories scattered around the marshland which is an ideal vantage point for bird watching and capturing breathtaking views of the wetland. 

Kushiro Marshland is accessible from Kushiro City, and a short train or bus ride will transport you to this serene, marshy landscape.
