Do you feel like there is more diversity in the Tokai region these days? This may not be just a feeling. Due to a shrinking population and increasing opportunities for higher-income paying jobs, the Tokai region has become an attractive place for many foreign nationals.
We believe there is the acceptance of foreign workers, which is expected to further increase in the four Tokai prefectures in the future, and village houses.
Background of the Increase in the Number of Foreign Residents in the Tokai Region
The population of foreign residents in the Tokai region is very high compared to that of Japan as a whole, and this trend is further accelerating. The reason for this seems to be the good working environment for foreign residents.
Aside from the good working environment, the minimum wage is high compared to the national average. According to Labor Bureau data, the minimum wage in Aichi Prefecture is 986 yen, effective October 1, 2022.
This is the fifth highest wage in Japan, following the Kanto metropolitan area and Osaka. Furthermore, the main reason for this is that it is an easy place to find a job, as it is a trade area mainly for manufacturing industries such as major automobile manufacturers that are open to accepting foreign nationals.
In other words, there is a high possibility of receiving a higher salary in the Tokai region compared to the national level.
Employment of Foreign Nationals
Looking at the number of foreign workers by industry, the manufacturing industry accounts for the majority. The next largest percentage is in the service industry. In all four Tokai prefectures, the number of foreign workers increased compared to the previous year in all industries. In particular, the construction, medical, and welfare industries have seen large increases in the number of foreign workers.
It is expected that more opportunities for foreign workers will become available in the four Tokai prefectures in the future.
Therefore, the foreign population is expected to continue to increase, and there is an urgent need to secure housing that foreign nationals can apply for, move into, and sign contracts for with peace of mind.
Transition of Foreign Nationals and Their Numbers
The number of foreign nationals working in Japan is increasing every year.
As of October 2021, there will be more than 1.72 million people working in Japan. This is the largest number to date.
Four prefectures, Aichi, Gifu, Mie, and Shizuoka, have the highest foreign population.
Aichi Prefecture in particular has a large foreign population of 541,807, ranking second in Japan after Tokyo.
The manufacturing industry is thriving, and many workplaces have foreign personnel as key personnel.
By nationality and region, China has the largest number of foreign workers nationwide, followed by South Korea and Vietnam. Vietnamese migrant workers, in particular, are showing notable growth with an increase of approximately 234,000 since the last survey, exceeding China’s increase of approximately 156,000. Looking at the percentage by nationality, Vietnamese has increased significantly from 5.0% in the previous survey to 13.4%. Vietnam has a large number of technical intern trainees and those staying for a significant period of time to work. These individuals are the main reason for the increase in incoming Vietnamese migrants.
