Japan has become a major tourist destination over the years, and the number of people who visit the island nation is growing all the time. There are some obvious choices, but there are some hidden gems that the casual visitor would miss if they don’t look hard enough. We will look at some popular and some lesser-known places you should visit when you go to Tokyo.
Akihabara
We will start by looking at the ever-popular Akihabara. This city is well known by many across the planet as a place to enjoy anime, gaming, and any other hobby you find yourself interested in. One of the biggest attractions is Electric City, which is directly outside of the station. There many arcades to visit and specialty shops that sell hard to find figures or other merchandise. It is a wonderful place to visit to get a taste of Otaku culture in Japan. On Sundays, they close the main roads from 1:00 to 6:00 pm and people can walk freely on the road without fear of moving vehicles.
Meiji Jingu
This is one of Japan’s most well-known and largest shrines. The shrine is seen as one of the top spots to visit in Tokyo and it was erected in memory of the late Emperor Meiji. It was constructed in 1921 and still stands as a great monument that is visited by many Japanese people throughout the year. It is especially popular during the New Year’s festivities and sees overwhelming crowds during that time. It’s one spot that you should consider during your stay.
Sensoji Temple
This large temple is in the Asakusa district and is only a twenty-minute walk from Tokyo Skytree. The other name that it goes by is Asakusa Kannon Temple and it is known for its giant lanterns at its large front gate. The temple is dedicated to the goddess, Kannon, who is known as a goddess of mercy. This is another spot that is popular during New Years and sees massive crowds of people every year as they try to get their New Year’s fortunes. It is Tokyo’s oldest temple and it has a massive shopping street, Nakamise, located at the outer gate. The shopping street has a large variety of shops that will fulfill the souvenir needs of any traveler. It is a must-see for all visitors.
Tokyo Tower
Tokyo Tower was, at one time, Tokyo’s tallest structure until it was eclipsed by Tokyo Skytree. Even though it doesn’t hold the title anymore, it is a wonderful place to visit. The surrounding area has temples and shrines for people to visit and enjoy, and the structure has picture spots labeled around it. You can be sure to find the perfect picture, especially during the seasonal events that frequently happen there. If you want to go to the upper decks of Tokyo Tower, you need to have around 3,000 yen on you. The upper decks boast a fantastic view of Tokyo and they have a café that will allow you to take in the sites at your leisure.
Tokyo Skytree
Tokyo Skytree has the title of the tallest structure in all of Japan. It can be seen from many places around Japan and has been a tourist attraction since it was built in 2012 and stands at 634 meters tall. It is mainly a television and broadcasting tower but it also has two observation decks and a café, as well as multiple gift shops. The Tokyo Skytree holds many events and galleries in and around the tower. It costs around 3,000 yen to go to the top deck, but it offers a view of Tokyo that is hard to find anywhere else in the city.
Golden Gai
For nightlife that you won’t find in other places, the Golden Gai bar walk is one that should be on any bar lovers list. It located next to the Toho Cinema in Kabuki Cho. It is only a fifteen-minute walk from Shinjuku station and has a few streets that are packed with small bars. The bars are all positioned next to each other, which allows you to try a variety of establishments in one evening. It a great place to begin or end a long night.
Yomiuriland
Yomiuriland is one of Tokyo’s well-known amusement parks. It houses many attractions and rides that the whole family can enjoy. There are a few companies that have set up their buildings on the amusement park grounds where they hold their tours and attractions. During the summer months, they have water slides and a small swim park that the public can enjoy. It is near Shinjuku and can make for a fun day trip.
Odaiba
Odaiba is also known as the lover’s city. It is a well-known dating area thanks to its many scenic spots near the water. It is common to see couples walking during sunset and enjoying the lit paths near the malls. There are museums located in the Pallet town mall, and the biggest attraction is the 4-story Gundam that stands outside of Diver’s city. They have many small events in and around the buildings, and during summertime, they hold beautiful fireworks festivals.
Harajuku
This is the most famous fashion street in all of Tokyo. It is known around the world for its stores and cosplayers who go to show off their outfits. You can find many kinds of specialty clothing shops that can make your personal items as well. It is usually crowded, and the vendors are always fighting for business from the passersby.
