The art spread across Europe with the Moors in Spain. It was also popular in the Victorian era, as well as in the 1970s, and it has once again become popular over the recent years.

Though a finished macrame wall hanging looks intricate and complex, there are usually only 3 main knots that you repeat, making it an easy project once you’ve got the hang of the knots! You might have even used the essential macrame knots in your childhood, friendship bracelets are created using macrame methods.

100 yen shop macrame supplies

Dowel

You will need a dowel to hand the piece from. At Daiso, you can find plain wooden sticks.

If you’d prefer a more rustic look for your wall hanging, have a look outside for a piece of driftwood or a small stick of bamboo.

If you’d like to make your DIY home décor off a circular frame, Daiso sells 11cm rings in the craft section (originally for bag handles) that you can use.

Rope/cord

There are a few options for what kind of cord to use. Generally, for smaller designs and more complex lacy designs, you’ll want a thinner cord. For a larger wall hanging, you’ll want to find a thicker cord, maybe even at a DIY shop.

For beginners, it’s best to start with a smaller wall hanging. The smaller cords are much cheaper and the strands you cut won’t need to be as long.

At any 100-yen shop, you’ll be able to find hemp string (usually in the stationary section). The hemp string is great for small, intricate, macrame pieces. Daiso also sells balls of jute yarn in the craft section (each ball is approximately 20 meters).

For a pop of color, at Daiso you can find specific ‘macrame yarn’. It’s perfect for colorful small pieces. For a soft feeling, use Daiso’s recycled cotton yarn for smaller wall hangings.

Cotton rope is the most popular twine used in macrame DIY home décor. Rope is great for larger pieces. You will need more rope, so be prepared to spend more money. Nevertheless, it’s still possible to do this on a Daiso-sized budget.

In the gardening section, Daiso stocks packs of 7 meters of 5mm cotton rope. Check your pattern to see how many meters you’ll need since you’ll probably need a few packs.

You can also check out your local DIY shop, such as Daiki if you are wanting to make a larger wall hanging from cotton rope.

If you’d like to make a larger piece with colorful cords, Daiso has a large selection of yarns for knitting and crochet. If you can’t find yarn thick enough you can always double up on the yarn to make it thicker. This can complicate things though since you’ll be dealing with more cords so it’s better suited for people who already have some experience with macrame.

Additional décor (optional)

Wooden and glass beads can be used to accent your 100 yen shop wall hanging. Make sure the holes in the beads are big enough for the kind of cord you use.

Macrame Wall Hanging Patterns

For your first DIY home décor macrame project, make use of the various wall hanging tutorials on YouTube to get an idea of how long your strands of rope need to be, how many strands of rope you need, how to make the different knots and different ways to combine the knots to make beautiful patterns.

Feel free to experiment and try out your ideas, you don’t need to stick to the exact patterns these guides suggest, but you can use them for guidance and inspiration.

For beginners, here is a cute semi-circle macrame wall hanging. You could try this pattern with all kinds of different colors or thicknesses of cord.

If you’re looking to make a larger piece, here is a simple but beautiful pattern you can try using 5mm cotton rope.

This is a small wall hanging you can also try using 5mm cotton rope, it’s great for beginners.

For a triangular-shaped wall hanging, try out this beginner-friendly pattern.

Assorted materials

To add some color to your apartment, try out this rainbow wall hanging, using yarn as well as cotton rope – it would look great in any space for children.

Here is a simple wall hanging, using acrylic knitting yarns and barely any knots.
