Sometimes we tend to accrue more
things than we need, either through an unneeded purchase or by getting too much
of something. We all tend to too much of something and find ourselves in need
of disposing of them in some way. In Japan, there are a few ways you are
supposed to go about ridding yourself of unwanted items.

Sifting Through it All

The first thing that you need to do is to go
through everything you have and discover what is necessary and what is excess.
This can be a challenge as you can see the value in many things that aren’t
really being used or that have a use in the foreseeable future. It is best to
think about how these things can be used for you in leisure or professional
settings. Once you have figured out which items you don’t need, then you can
sort out your stuff into groups. You should do this for when you decide to
finally dispose of the things.

Where to go?

Finding out where to dispose of your items can
be a bit of a problem as Japan has very distinct areas and places to take them.
If you don’t do it properly, then you can’t get rid of them, and you may incur
a fine in the process. Here are a few ways to get rid of different kinds of
items.

Schedule a Pick-up

If you are trying to get rid of large
furniture, electronics, or appliances, you can set up an appointment with the
city for pick-up. You will have to have all your stuff out at the appropriate
times that you have scheduled. There are even some trucks that go around
neighborhoods playing some soft music that let you know they are there for item
pick-up. There is a charge involved in this method of the disposal, so make
sure you have enough money for all your items.

Recycle Shop

There are recycle shops all over Japan, and
they all take different kinds of items. Some are meant for clothing, others are
meant for appliances and electronics, while others only deal in home furnishing.
You will have to find them yourself and be prepared to be offered much less
than what you paid for it. Depending on the quality of the item you may be able
to get back close to 50% of the original price if you are lucky. Keep your
expectations low, and remember you are trying to get rid of the stuff without
paying a fee.

Online Trading

Social media is a great place to go when you
want to get rid of something quick. There are entire threads of people simply
giving away the items because they are leaving or don’t want to go through the
process of selling. These places are perfect for you to quickly get rid of your
things, and they will meet you at public places to ensure nothing goes wrong.
There are other threads that are meant for selling your stuff at whatever
prices you see fit. These will lead to you having to haggle more for your items
as people will want to get them for as little as possible. You can set the
conditions for meeting and payment, and where you want to sell to. It can take
some time with this method if you are trying to sell something that is not
needed by many people, so you can use whichever works best your situation.

What is Ok to Sell?

Almost everything is ok to recycle or sell on
your own. From your clothes to your pencils, you can try to get anyone to buy
or trade for your things as long as you aren’t selling things that you can’t
get anywhere except special shops like pets and things of that nature. You must
do your own research on this if you aren’t sure what you can get rid of for a
profit. Some cities may have their own rules and regulations about certain
items, so make sure to check everything before selling.

You can easily rid yourself of all the
unwanted items you have in Japan.
